ANDERSON — The Anderson Municipal Airport has been named Airport of the Year by Aviation Indiana.

The announcement was made at the annual Aviation Indiana conference held in Terre Haute.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation’s 2022 Indiana State Aviation System Plan, the airport was determined to have an overall annual economic impact of $19,898,000, including 134 jobs.

“I am proud of the recognition that the Anderson airport has earned,” Anderson Mayor Thomas Broderick Jr. said in a press release. “Our airport has proven to be a valuable resource in our community for business and medical purposes as well as private use.

“Airport manager Brian McMillen and his team have constantly gone above and beyond in providing quality service and care while seeking opportunities to partner with the community on a variety of events and making ongoing improvements of the facility.”

Competing airports were evaluated by Aviation Indiana on their economic impact, aviation education actions, community outreach and engagement, safety and security measures, environmental improvements, aesthetics, and administration.

The Anderson airport’s application highlights included: a profound economic impact on the local economy with an increase of corporate and personal air traffic; the Annual Airshow, which drew over 8,000 to the airport; the eclipse viewing event, the largest event in the county which included partners Anderson Madison County Visitors Bureau and Madison County Chamber of Commerce; an expansion of services for corporate users and private owners, including freight operations and de-icing services; and renovation of the terminal layout to accommodate tenants’ expansion needs.

The selection process included an unscheduled on-site inspection and evaluation.

“The Anderson Airport thanks Aviation Indiana for this amazing recognition,” McMillen said. “We share this award with our entire staff, tenants, corporate users, our board, and the city administration.

“We are proud to participate in Anderson’s growing economy and to serve as a driving factor by addressing the needs of our corporate customers as well as being an attractive amenity for new businesses interested in our community,” McMillen added.

The Anderson airport is one of 114 airports in Indiana. The 640-acre facility has two runways, 106 airplanes and more than 25,000 annual operations.
